With charging technology, the problem of excessive heating introduced by the uninterrupted application of high voltage electricity has consistently posed a significant problem. However, this seems to be solved thanks to the innovation brought by Comemso with its advanced cooling cable system.
As reported by Automotive Powertrain Technology International (APTI), Comemso, the manufacturer of test equipment for EV and EVSE, has developed a new Megawatt Charging System (MCS) that has an output power of 1500kW.
This charging system was developed to accommodate all existing global charging standards at the same time, which include CCS not only Combo 1 and Combo 2, NACS, CHAdeMO, GB/T as well as AC and DC charging.
Kiriakos Athanasas, the Chief Executive Officer of Comemso, highlighted an ongoing challenge regarding megawatt charging when he claimed, “Delivering high power is not just about putting out more power; there are innovative ways to deal with thermal management, cable construction, and infrastructure building. Our research and supplier partnerships have been extensive, as resolving these real world infrastructure challenges reliably is no easy task.”
Even though the system’s detailed technical parameters remain undisclosed, it is expected that a Megawatt Charging System is capable of fully charging a 1000kW battery pack within 20 to 30 minutes. The biggest issue with very high power charging has been power to heat ratio, but Comemso’s proprietary cooling cable system solves the issue of heat dissipation even when paired with international high power charging standards. This cooling can now achieve sustained high levels for EVSE and EV testing without overheating problems. Hence, the incorporation of novel cooling systems enables charging of electric vehicles within acceptable temperature ranges.
Another primary characteristic of the MCS system is flexibility. The modular design guarantees the implementation of new features within the custom developed EV charging systems and interoperability with newer standards that will surely come over time.
Comemso claims to have invented a new form of charging technology in partnership with industry suppliers, boasting a state of the art cooling and cabling system for high current operations. With the intent to take it a step further, laboratories and OEMs have the ability to integrate custom solutions such as charging facilities with controlled climates.
Comemso’s Chief Commercial Officer, Anita Athanasas spoke out about the long-term vision. She said, “This is not only a product launch, this is a whole new paradigm in EV charging technology. We hope that our customers will be able to put this technology to good use.” As shown by APTI, report Athanasas has made ideas clear.
